Radiation Therapy
A Targeted Treatment
Radiation therapy is a vital component of cancer treatment that utilizes targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors. At Apex Cancer Care, our expert team of radiation oncologists specializes in delivering personalized radiation therapy plans to improve outcomes for our patients.
Understanding Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy, is a localized treatment that uses high-energy rays or particles to target and destroy cancer cells. It can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with surgery or chemotherapy, depending on the type and stage of cancer.
During the initial consultation, our radiation oncologists will conduct a thorough evaluation of your cancer diagnosis, medical history, laboratory results, imaging studies, and other relevant materials. They will collaborate with other physicians involved in your care to develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
The type of radiation therapy delivered is determined by several factors:
- The type of cancer
- The location
- The size of the tumor
- Your overall health, age, and medical history
Our state-of-the-art tools and technology allow precise targeting of radiation to minimize damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Linear Accelerators are state-of-the-art systems that incorporate robotic and automated features, allowing for Dynamic Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). With this advanced and sophisticated technology, we can deliver the most accurate treatments possible, even for tumors that move as the patient breathes.
Our Radiation Therapy Offerings
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
An advanced radiation treatment technique that delivers precise doses of radiation to cancerous tumors while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. By using sophisticated computer algorithms, IMRT allows for the modulation of radiation intensity across multiple angles and beam shapes, resulting in improved treatment accuracy and reduced side effects.
Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy
An advanced radiation treatment technique that delivers highly focused and precise doses of radiation to tumors or specific areas in the body. It uses imaging technology to accurately target the tumor, while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. This non-invasive therapy is particularly effective for treating small tumors in locations that are difficult to access or where surgery may not be feasible.
External Beam Radiation Therapy
A highly effective and commonly used treatment for cancer. It involves delivering high-energy radiation beams from an external machine precisely to the tumor site, targeting cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. EBRT is administered over several sessions, allowing the body time to heal between treatments.

What to Expect from Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy may have temporary side effects that vary depending on the treatment area and individual factors. Our team will provide you with comprehensive information and supportive care to manage any potential side effects, which may include fatigue, skin changes, nausea, or hair loss.
Most side effects gradually improve or disappear after treatment ends, and our radiation oncologists and medical physicist/dosimetrist will closely monitor your progress to ensure your comfort and well-being throughout the process.
Different Types of Radiation Therapy Tools
Linear Accelerator (LINAC)
The Linear Accelerator (LINAC) is a cornerstone of radiation therapy. This sophisticated device precisely delivers high-energy radiation to target cancer cells while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. With its advanced imaging capabilities and innovative treatment techniques, LINAC ensures accurate and effective radiation delivery, promoting optimal tumor control and minimizing side effects.

Together, we aim to help you achieve the best possible outcomes on your journey to recovery.
CT Simulation
Effective Radiation Therapy Planning
CT Simulation, or Computed Tomography Simulation, is an essential first step in cancer treatment, providing critical insights for planning radiation therapy with precision and care. The process typically begins with a consultation from your cancer care team to discuss and outline the best treatment approach. During the CT Simulation, advanced imaging technology creates detailed cross-sectional images of your body.
These images are used to accurately map the tumor and the surrounding healthy tissues, allowing your care team, including medical physicists, to precisely define the treatment areas. This ensures radiation is delivered directly to the tumor while reducing exposure to healthy tissues, prioritizing both effectiveness and your overall well-being. By utilizing CT Simulation, we can optimize the effectiveness and safety of cancer treatment, while minimizing side effects and maximizing the chances of successful outcomes for our patients.

What to Expect During the CT Simulation
During your CT Simulation session, our dedicated CT technician will guide you through the process.
- Comfort and Privacy: We prioritize your comfort and privacy during the CT Simulation. You will be provided with a sheet for cover, and our team will ensure your modesty is respected throughout the procedure.
- Preparation and Positioning: To accurately determine the exact location, shape, and size of the tumor, you will be positioned on the CT table in the same way as for each treatment.
- Imaging and Planning: Stickers will be placed on your hips and lower abdomen to help align the laser light cross points on the machine. It is crucial to remain still and breathe normally during the scanning process. After the scan, our radiation oncologists will review the images to determine the exact body placement for treatment.
Vac-lok Body Mold and Tattoos: Following image approval, a body mold called a Vac-lok will be placed under the bottom half of your body. This personalized mold will be wrapped around your legs and feet, creating an exact fit for each treatment. Stickers will be removed, and small dot-sized tattoos will be applied in their place. These tattoos serve as markers for precise alignment during treatment.
