What Is Bone Cancer?

Bone cancer refers to the abnormal growth of cells within the bone tissue. It is a relatively uncommon form of cancer that can develop anywhere in the skeletal system. It can be categorized as primary bone cancer, which means that it originated in bone tissue.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

The symptoms of bone cancer can vary depending on the location and stage of the disease. Common signs may include persistent bone pain, swelling or lumps near the affected area, fractures or weakened bones, and unexplained weight loss or fatigue.1 If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to consult with a doctor who can conduct a thorough evaluation.

To diagnose bone cancer, your doctor may perform a series of tests, including imaging scans, such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs, bone biopsies, and blood tests. These diagnostic procedures help determine the type, stage, and extent of the cancer, guiding the development of an appropriate treatment plan.

Types of Bone Cancer

  • Chondrosarcoma: A cancer that develops in the cartilage and tends to affect older adults.2
  • Metastatic carcinoma: The most common type of bone cancer.
  • Osteosarcoma: Primarily affects children and young adults.2
  • Ewing sarcoma: A rare type that often occurs in children and teenagers.2
