What is Adrenal Cancer?
Understanding, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options
Adrenal cancer takes the form of abnormal growths that develop in the adrenal glands. These tumors can be either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). While most adrenal tumors are benign and do not cause significant health problems, some can produce excessive hormones, leading to various symptoms and complications.1
Symptoms and Diagnosis
The symptoms of adrenal tumors can vary depending on the type and size of the tumor. Some common signs include1:
- Abdominal bloating
- Unexplained weight gain or loss
- Loss of appetite
- Changes in hormone levels
- Pink/purple stretch marks
It is important to note that not all adrenal tumors cause symptoms and are often discovered incidentally during medical exams or imaging tests. To diagnose arenal tumors, our experienced team at Apex Cancer Care may perform a series of tests, including blood tests to measure hormone levels, imaging tests, such as CT scans or MRIs, and biopsies, if necessary. These diagnostic procedures help us determine the nature of the tumor and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Types of Adrenal Tumors
There are different types of adrenal tumors, including adrenocortical carcinoma and pheochromocytoma. Each type has its own characteristics, treatment options, and potential impact on hormone levels.2 Our knowledgeable team will provide you with detailed information specific to your diagnosis and guide you through the best course of action.
Treatment Options
The treatment options for adrenal tumors depend on several factors, including the type of tumor, its size, and whether it is benign or malignant. Our multidisciplinary team of experts at Apex Cancer Care of Central Texas will carefully evaluate your specific case and recommend the most suitable treatment approach.
Surgery
Surgical removal of the tumor, known as adrenalectomy, is often the treatment of choice for larger or cancerous tumors.
Chemotherapy
Medications are used to kill cancer cells or prevent them from growing and spreading. Chemotherapy can be given before or after surgery, or in cases where surgery is not an option.
Radiation Therapy
High-energy radiation is used to target and destroy cancer cells. It can be used as the main treatment or in combination with surgery and chemotherapy.
Monitoring
For small and benign tumors that are not causing symptoms or hormone imbalances, close observation and periodic imaging tests may be recommended.
